The US Mint had to narrow down a list of 35 possible designs for the new American Silver Eagle coin, taking place over the course of 2020. Finally, Emily Damstra’s design was chosen as the new reverse image on this collection.
The American bald eagle carries a branch in its talons that represents the natural strength and resilience of America. Designer Emily Damstra’s new reverse image for The American Eagle collection captures this concept perfectly, while maintaining the same intricate detail as before to please collectors who have been collecting since 1986.
The improved image of Walking Liberty on the obverse includes a reintroduction to Adolph A. Weinman’s artistic signature mark, harking back to 1916 when he created this iconic design originally.
The obverse side of the 2021 American Silver Eagle Type 2 Coin has a beautiful design that shows Liberty in left-profile relief walking toward the sun on an early morning horizon. In God We Trust is inscribed above Weinman’s signature, which consists of his “AW” initials.
In a more life-like design, the American bald eagle swoops down into view with its wings flexed behind its back and an oak branch in it’s talons. Emily Damstra chose to include this symbolic and national tree as strength is part of our national identity.
Emily gave this quote to the US Mint on the inspiration for her design:
“My inspiration for this design grew from a desire to show our national bird—with all of the values it embodies—in a unique way that could also convey traits such as diligence, cooperation, care, and protection. For that reason, nest-building came to mind. I also liked the idea of including an oak branch in my design, since the oak is America’s national tree and a symbol of strength. Lastly, I sought to ensure that my design worked well with the coin’s beautiful obverse.” — Emily Damstra, Artistic Infusion Program Member
The Secretary of US Treasury, Janet Yellow also made comments in their release video, stating: “The American Eagle bullion coins are the flagship bullion products of the U.S. Mint, and the new American Eagle bullion coin designs to mark this anniversary are really quite beautiful.”
It was sculpted by former Mint Medallic Artist Michael Gaudioso and made from 1 ounce silver with inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” (Latin meaning “one out of many”), “1 OZ. FINE SILVER”, and “$1.” A full video put out by the US Mint annoucing the new designs for the 2021 Silver Eagle can be found here.
This coin is not yet in production and will be released Summer 2021. The only place to buy a new set of coins like this would be from the US Mint directly or an authorized dealer such as Scottsdale Mint.

Rated 3 out of 5 Detail is poor compared to Type 1

Brilliant uncirculated? More like dull and worn. The Type 1 walking liberty had a face. This one has as much detail as my 50 year old class ring. Regarding the reverse, all photographers know not to cut off only a person’s feet. They cut off part of the eagle’s wing. US mint, you really dropped the ball on this one.
