Kek, often spelled Kuk and Keku, is a god in ancient Egyptian mythology. He is regarded as the personification of the abysmal void from whence all things sprang. The frog signified his ties to the Nile and fertility, while the snake stood for his connections with the underworld and the forces of evil in popular art.
According to Egyptian mythology, Kek was one of the four gods that helped bring about creation with Amun, Nun, and Heh. Invocations to him were common in magical rituals because, as the god of darkness and chaos, he was thought to have the capacity to both create and destroy.
Kek was feared by many, but he was also worshiped as a guardian god who kept watch over both the living and the dead. As a symbol of rebirth and metamorphosis, he appeared often on amulets and other artifacts thought to provide protection. Kek is still often spoken about as a funny internet meme in today’s society, especially in online forums.
Kek has amassed a sizable fanbase in recent years, notably in specialized subreddits and social media communities. His popularity skyrocketed when he was linked to the viral “kekistan” joke that went viral on the social news aggregation platform Reddit. In the gaming community, the word “kek” is commonly used as a humorous shorthand for “LOL” or “laugh out loud.” Kek has also been mentioned in a wide variety of other media, including the wildly successful MMORPG World of Warcraft. When a member of the Horde speaks “lol” in Orcish, the Alliance member sees the word “kek” instead. The term has subsequently entered common use, not only in the gaming industry but also in the world of politics.
