The Walking Liberty Half Dollar

Designed by sculptor Adolph A. Weinman, the Walking Liberty Half Dollar debuted in 1916. The obverse depicts Liberty walking toward the rising sun while carrying branches of laurel and oak, with the American flag flowing behind her.

The reverse features an eagle perched on a rocky outcrop with its wings raised. The Walking Liberty design later gained renewed recognition when the U.S. Mint adapted Weinman’s obverse for the American Silver Eagle, first issued in 1986.
