The Route 66 Shield in Gold
The Route 66 shield is one of the most recognizable symbols associated with the historic highway. Once used to guide motorists traveling the route, the familiar marker remains closely connected to Route 66 and its place in American travel history.
That shield is the focus of this 1/100th oz gold bar. Struck in .9999 fine gold, its small fractional format brings the familiar Route 66 emblem to Scottsdale Mint’s centennial collection in gold.
A Century of Route 66
Officially designated in 1926, Route 66 stretched approximately 2,400 miles from Chicago to Los Angeles through Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California.
As automobile travel expanded, the highway became associated with cross-country road trips, classic cars, family vacations, and the roadside businesses that served generations of travelers. Diners, motels, gas stations, neon signs, and distinctive roadside attractions all became part of the Route 66 experience.
Although Route 66 was removed from the U.S. Highway System in 1985, preserved stretches of the road and many historic landmarks remain. Its shield continues to represent an important chapter in American automotive and travel history as Route 66 reaches its centennial in 2026.
